I’ve been interested in art since I was in elementary school. Viewing and creating art stretches my imagination and uplifts me. I’ve worked with most mediums but especially enjoy watercolor. I love watercolor’s transparent color and instant results.
When I attended college in Idaho as a young adult, I chose advertising design as my major. A degree in Advertising Design is not quite the same as a degree in Fine Art; it is more geared toward the commercial/advertising side of art. I put aside schooling for many years while raising a family in my twenties and thirties and went back as an adult returning student to Delta College in Stockton, and graduated from CSU Stanislaus in Turlock. At that time, I was more concerned about a career and became a music major instead of an art major. I now teach school as a fifth grade band and strings instructor, but still enjoy creating art on the side.
Nature is my favorite subject to paint. Florals and landscapes are the subjects I paint most often. I would like to try some portraits too, but haven’t gotten around to it yet. There are so many things I am interested in creating, not just watercolors. Sewing, quilting, and gardening are other interests that steal my time. Maybe when summertime comes and I am out of school again, I will try some portraits.
The best art teacher I had was a friend I used to paint with in the 80’s. My friend Jodi Jensen was the watercolorist I painted with, and she was and still is a very successful watercolorist! She sold her artwork for a living through the 80’s and 90’s in Bay Area art shows. I learned about watercolor just by painting with her. She is a phenomenal artist and has created outstanding watercolors. Check out her website at jodijensen.com.
